Course Description

  • The Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping ( Approval No: 3-TR(135) /98 )
  • It meets the requirements laid down in Regulation I/12, Section A-I/12 and Table A-II/1 & A-II/3, Code B-I/12 of the STCW Convention, as amended in 2010 and all additional criteria specified in the STCW convention, applicable to the issue of the certificate.
  • The ARPA course is conducted in accordance to the guidelines stipulated in the DGS Training Circular no. 6 of 2004 and IMO Model Course 1.07.
  • It runs for 30 Hrs consisting of Theory and Simulator exercises.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of this course is to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in the use of ARPA

A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to

  • Understand the basics of ARPA including the principle types of ARPA systems
  • Set up and maintain ARPA displays.
  • choose an appropriate mode of display
  • select plotting and graphics controls suitable to the circumstances
  • make appropriate use of operational alarms
  • acquire and plot the targets posing threat of collision
  • extract the anti-collision information needed for taking an early action to avoid close quarter situations
  • Understand the possible risks of over-reliance on ARPA

The Simulator

IMC uses the ELAB NAV-E Radar-Arpa Navigation Simulator, which is built in-house and is type-approved by DNV for conduct of the ARPA course as per IMO Model course 1.07. The simulator at IMC consists of 4 own ship stations each with an IMO complaint Radar/ARPA Display.
