Course Description

  • The ROSC course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Approval No: 3-TR(135)/98)
  • It meets the requirements laid down in Regulation I/12, Section A-I/12 and Table A-II/1 & A-II/3, Code B-I/12 of the STCW Convention, as amended in 2010 and all additional criteria specified in the STCW convention, applicable to the issue of the certificate.
  • The ROSC Course is conducted in accordance to the guidelines stipulated in the DGS Training Circular no. 5 of 2004 and IMO Model Course 1.07.
  • It runs for 60 Hrs consisting of Theory, Plotting and Simulator exercises.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of this course is to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in the use of the Radar equipment.

A trainee successfully completing this course and meeting the required performance standards will be able to:

  • recognize when radar should be in use
  • will select a suitable mode and range setting for the circumstances
  • will be able to set controls for optimal performance
  • recognise critical targets
  • measure bearing and distances, and the use of these for fixing the ship's position.
  • maintain a plot of the movement of other ships as an aid to collision avoidance. Application of International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG 1972).
  • will be aware of the limitations of the equipment in detecting targets and in terms of accuracy.

The Simulator

IMC uses the ELAB NAV-E Radar-Arpa Navigation Simulator, which is built in-house and is type-approved by DNV for conduct of the ROSC course as per IMO Model course 1.07. The simulator at IMC consists of 4 own ship stations each with an IMO complaint Radar Display.
